Concentration Number Two

My art work is centered around patterns and animals. I am creating the two together and experimenting with the backgrounds and either working their way into the animal or showing characteristics of the animal. some of my work may show opposite backgrounds of that the animal's shapes and patterns show and this could be used as a contrast, and then some of the will use equal patterns in the background to show the animal connecting with the background and the setting.
First of all i love colors so i try to use a wide range of color and designs in my background. i play with the designs and structure them to flow well with the animal that i incorporate.
what works best for me is usually picking an animal i like and studying its features and colors and patterns on its skin or fur. i also look at the animal and think of what setting it would be in and what colors the animal shows to me and that is how i choose what i do. i love patterns and animals so i try to mix them all together :)

  1. i like the bird! the colors are very pretty. i like them a lot! I really like how you incorporated your designs into the tail but that you didn't force the designs to fit into the entire bird. It is nice moderation. I also like the value you created by using different colors instead of just lights and darks. the darker purple on the right side is nice compared to the lighter pink on the other side. the branch is confusing to me though. I don't like how abruptly it stops. and is that more of the branch coming out of the bottom of the birds tail? it is hard to tell what exactly that is... also, where is the birds other foot? (i'm sorry if it is there and i just can't see it from the picture). i think that it would have created more of a balance if the branch had extended across the page to the other side or even just a little further out from the bird's body instead of just ending. also, it might be nice to add lighter hints of branches or trees or something behind the bird to give the piece a sense of depth and not just the image and the background.

  2. Grrrr tigeerrrrrr I thought that piece was part of the first set you submitted! Well, anyway, I’ll give it a mini critique. I like it due to the patterns and textures because I’m a pattern and texture aficionado and no one knows it. I, also, think it photographed wonderfully, aside from what looks like a shiny glare on the left of the canvas. It might be a bit streaky, due to the brushstrokes, but you have so many textures, patterns, and movement it’s easily overlooked. (I only see it because I’m ocd about streakiness due to markers being one of my choice color producing mediums)

As for the bird I, also, really enjoy looking at this piece. The only thing that I’m concerned about is the black part at the bottom of the tail. I don’t know if it’s a fancy extension or more of the branch. I, also, must admit that this piece doesn’t have the same unity as your tiger piece. However, I’m not all too bothered. It’s elegant and simple. Not every piece has to be an over-the-top production! And your color choices are spectacular. (In both I mean) It’s quite a feat for the eyes.

However, there is one piece I’d like to re-touch. I understand the panda piece was way back when but I do feel it needs more work. Your tiger, bird, and whatnot all have interesting textures incorporated in with the flesh of the animal. The panda, on the other hand, seems so bland. The level of craftsmanship and quality of work is quite different between your panda and the tiger. Then again, maybe you shouldn’t do anything! You’re supposed to show progression, right? Well, you most certainly will if you have the panda, first, and have the others follow.

  3. All of your pieces connect with each other so well! I was in the art room the other day and I could tell yours were all part of the same concentration. The patterns really draw the eye in to the piece. Your colors, especially in the tiger and bird, are beautiful. (The warm colors of the tiger are my absolute favorite) There's sooo much variety in each your pieces with patterns, animals, colors, relationships....It's just great. That's the best way to describe it. :)
On your bird piece I especially like the relationship between the foreground and the pattern in the back. To me the pattern not only reflects the feathers and color on the bird but it also reflects the branch, with the one multiple paths....

  4. I love the birds head i just can't stop looking at it, :) anyway... i love how you are incorporating your love of patters and texture into all the aspects of the pieces to make them fluid and whole. I still feel like you have lots of directions with how this idea will develop and these are only the early stages of something great :) the texture and feel of each piece are nice and the colors really flow well together. great job :)

  5. I just wanted to say that I LOVE your concetration. And I love the way you've gone about it, too. You're not taking the idea of 'patterns in nature' too literally (merely drawing animals with lost of pretty colors and patterns on them). You've been able to show depth, color, and pattern all very well by usinga somewhat more abstract style, which I think shows real artistic talent. It's harder to see a tiger and think of circles than it is to see a tiger and focus merely on the stripes. And the bee-eater bird is wonderful, too. Your color choise and composition in both these works are great, but this one stands out to me the most. Lovely in all respects. Congrats!
